Victory Through Surrender – to God!

BELIEVE    Victory Through Surrender — to God!

What do you want most out of life?  Sociologists have found – when you ask people all over the world – What do you want most out of life?  The most common answer by far is I just want to be happy.  This morning, we’re going to dig in to that desire a bit – and ask – what is the best way to find and hold on to the happiness that everyone wants?
A few months ago – I was intrigued when I heard that the most popular elective class at Harvard University is – a class on how to find happiness.  I thought if the smart students at Harvard were convinced that this professor had some good answers – I should check it out.
The Happiness professor, Dr. Tal Beh-Shahar wrote a very helpful book: Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment.  Dr. Beh-Shahar shares that the secrets will surprise you.  The first secret he discovered was that people have to decide what kind of happiness they want.  Do you want temporary happiness, or lasting happiness?

What Do You Want:  TEMPORARY  HAPPINESS?  Or  LASTING  HAPPINESS?

People in America have more of the ingredients for temporary happiness than anyone else in the world or in history.  We have more money and material goods.  We have more sexual permissiveness.  We have more candy and drugs.  We have more power than anyone else.  The one thing we don’t have more of is lasting happiness.

America has more of the ingredients for temporary happiness – than anyone else in the world or in history – but unfortunately we have ended up with some of the greatest sadness in the world and history.  Depression rates in the USA are at all time highs.  Suicide rates are at all time highs.  Tragically enough – suicide rates among teens have about tripled over the last 30 years.

Why do we feel so bad – when on the surface it looks like we have it so good?  Dr. Beh-Shahar discovered that the big problem is that you will never find lasting happiness by chasing temporary happiness.  No matter how much food you eat, how much sex you have, or how many candy bars you eat or drugs you pop – they can’t produce lasting happiness.  In fact – after their moment of pleasure – they leave you feeling much lower than you were before that temporary moment.

Jesus shows us that there is indeed a better way – that has been proven for thousands of years to produce the lasting happiness that everyone says that they want.  The challenge is that you have to be willing to surrender to God and follow His plan.

Matthew 6:9-10    Jesus said, Because you know that God loves you, you can pray very simply.  Our Father in heaven, You are holy and You know what is best.  We ask for Your guidance to help set the world right — make it more and more like Your Kingdom.  Help us to do Your will here on earth — as it is done in heaven.

Jesus is simple and direct.  Let Me show you why it is a whole lot smarter to do it God’s way – instead of insisting on doing it My Way.  God loves you.  God is in heaven – He sees a much bigger picture than we can see.  God wants to help you to start experiencing the happiness that will last for all eternity – by starting to live by His principles right now.

Jesus shows us that you can find the happiness that lasts and actually keeps growing stronger – by surrendering to God’s plan and by getting in the harness with God.  Jesus says – it’s your choice.  You can choose to do life the hard way – all by yourself.  Or you can surrender to God and get Jesus’ help for every challenge in your life.

Matthew 11:28-29 (MSG)     Jesus said, Are you tired?  Worn out?  Come to Me. I’ll show you how to find real rest.  Put on My yoke — for it fits perfectly.  Walk with Me and work with Me — let Me teach you the best way to live.  I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.

We don’t like to surrender our wills – so we need to be convinced that our Heavenly Father really does know what is best for us.

Does Father  REALLY  KNOW  BEST

Trusting God when things are going smoothly in your life isn’t too hard.  The real test comes when you hit the difficult and painful times – and you feel like giving up.

I think it helps to see that Jesus struggled with trusting God the Father also.  Jesus hit His biggest problem – when He knew that in just a few hours – He was going to be suffering one of the most excruciating tortures that had ever been designed – the agony of a slow and torturous death on a cross.

Jesus did the same thing that most of us do in our hard times – He asked if there was an easier way?  Come on.  I know You can do this.  You’re God the Father.  You can do anything.

Jesus did the same thing we all do – when He asked if there was an easier way.  And then Jesus did the hard thing – that we rarely do – He said the bottom line is that I want Your will to be done; not Mine.

Mark 14:35-36 (NLT)    Jesus fell to the ground.  He prayed that, if it were possible, that He wouldn’t have to go through this awful time of suffering.  “Abba,        Father,” Jesus cried out, “everything is possible for You.  Please take this cup of suffering away from Me.  Yet I want Your will to be done, not Mine.”

Sooner or later, we are all going to come up against some really big problems.  Am I going to be honest – even when it costs me?  Am I going to remain faithful to my spouse?  Am I going to do the right thing – when nobody is watching?

Like Jesus, we all have to answer the question every day – do I believe that Father really knows best?

As 1 Cor. 6 reminds us – our focus is not on how much can I get away with?  Our focus is – Do I believe that God’s plan is the best plan?  Do I want to honor God with the way I live?

1 Corinthians 6:12-13 (MSG)    Just because something is technically legal doesn’t mean that it’s good for you.  If I went around doing whatever I thought I could get away with, I’d become a slave to my whims.  God has honored us with the gift of our bodies.  And we need to honor God by using our bodies according to His guidelines

Have to work through the tough question – Does Father really know what is best – and then to figure out What does God expect from me?

What Does God  EXPECT?

Some people are afraid that if they surrender to God and become a Christian – they will never have any more fun and they will never have any money – because God expects them to give everything to Him.

God makes it clear.  Look, I’m not after your money.  I’m not after your children.  What I am really after is helping you to live a better life.

Micah 6:7-8 (MSG)    What would really impress GOD?   Offering Him thousands of rams and barrels of olive oil?  Would God be moved if I sacrificed my firstborn child, my precious baby, to pay for my sin?  God has shown us what is good and how God wants us to live.  It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor.  Be compassionate and loyal in your love.  And live humbly — obeying God. Sometimes, God’s plan seems a little too simple and naïve.  How can I be fair – in a world where people aren’t always fair?  How can I be compassionate in a dog eat dog competitive world?  How can I be kind – when people might think I’m weak?  We are afraid of following God’s way – because we fear that people who aren’t Christians will try to take advantage of us.

Let me share with you the lessons that some of the toughest people in the world, the CIA, discovered about being successful in a dangerous world.  The CIA did a study to find out which strategy works best for protecting yourself from your enemies?  Enemies like Al Qaeda, Russia, and China.  What should you do to build a safe world?  Strike first – before they know what hit them?  Don’t get mad – get even?

The CIA tried thousands of different strategies for protecting yourself from very dangerous enemies – and the strategy that was far and away the most effective – was also the simplest.  Treating people with justice, compassion, and staying humble – consistently worked much better than any other strategy.  Turns out – God is not so dumb and impractical after all.

God’s way is not religious nonsense that will get you killed in the real world.  God’s way is the smartest way – that builds the lasting happiness of peace and prosperity for you and others – because they can see that you are being fair, caring, and kind.  Some people claim it’s being weak – God and the CIA show us that it has been proven to work and leads to the best lasting happiness and victory for everyone.

Shouting and screaming and bullying others leads only to broken relationships and fighting.  Anger and hostility – creates anger and hostility in others.  Being fair, caring, and kind – builds trust and respect and inspires people to want to work with you.

The most popular professor at Harvard, Psychologists, Economists, the CIA and God have provided a lot of evidence to show us that surrendering to God is the only way you can reach the victory everyone desires of lasting happiness.  The last challenge to overcome, is also the hardest one.  It’s not a onetime surrender – it’s a daily decision to keep on surrendering to God.

You Have to  DECIDE  —  DAILY!

Surrendering to God – is a lot like making a commitment to get healthy by changing your diet and exercising.  It would be great – if you could go without eating and exercise for 24 hours straight – and the mission was accomplished.  Reality is a lot tougher.  Every day – I have to be careful about what I eat.  Every day I have to keep on exercising.

We are motivated to diet and exercise – because the results are worth it.  We want to be as healthy as we can to enjoy life to the fullest.  Jesus helps to motivate us to surrender to God every day – by showing us it is worth it – because surrendering to God is the only way we can reach our true eternal life.

Luke 9:23-24 (NLT)    Jesus said to everyone, Anyone who wants to follow Me must put aside their own desires and conveniences.  They must be willing to surrender to God daily, take up their cross and follow Me!  If you try to hold on to your temporary life — you will lose your true eternal life.   Those who are willing to surrender to God will receive true and everlasting life

Jesus reminds us – even if you have the fastest car in the world – you won’t be able to keep it forever.  Even if you have the biggest house on the lake – you won’t be able to keep it forever.  You get to choose – are the things that I can hold on to for a maximum of 90 years most important?  Or the things that I can hold on to for 90 million years plus all the rest of eternity?

God shows us that even though we do have to decide every day – it’s an easy choice to make when we see that God’s way is the best way.  The way of Justice, Compassion, and Kindness is best for you and for everyone else.  One night stands, eating a whole box of candy, or drinking a fifth of whiskey – might make you happy for a few hours – but it won’t last.

Romans 12:1 (MSG)    So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your   everyday, ordinary life — your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life — and place it before God as an offering — a Living Sacrifice.  Worship God every day by living the best life you can for Him!

When you make the choice to surrender to God – and give Him your best – God multiplies your sacrifice – and gives it back to you as the happiness that does last.  The happiness that you can hold on to for all eternity!
